Have you ever looked at models walk the runway and wonder, “wow, every outfit looks good on them…” Like seriously, they can put on a sack, belt it and boom! They are still rocking it. This is the advantage of a rectangle body shape because you can mold the shape easily with patterns, accessories, and how an outfit fit and lay into a more flattering silhouette. Just look at celebrities like Anne Hathaway, Cameron Diaz and Natalie Portman.  It’s like, no matter what they wear they are the bomb. But don't fret. A rectangle body shape has its own challenges. So how can you tell if one has a Rectangle body shape?

YOU HAVE...

  • Bust, waist and hip measurements are all about the same
  • When weight is put on, they are dispersed all over the body
  • Not a lot of definition on the waistline

Rectangle shape gals are known for their toned arms, shapely legs and décolletage.  With their boyish shape, the challenge is to make their body shape look feminine. That said, many famous actresses and female athletes have rectangle bodies.

STYLE GOALS:

Feminize the masculine/boyish shape as much as possible

  • Invest in a great fitting bra
  • Choose soft fabrics that drape but avoid clingy fabrics
  • If you tend to have broad shoulders, consider wearing solid colored tops to keep your shoulders softer looking. Look for styles with soft sleeves as it de-emphasizes your broad shoulders. Kimonos are a good addition to your outfit because of their sleeve and drop shoulders.
  • Strapless, halter and V-neck tops and dresses are great choices as they add femininity to the upper part of the body and draw the eyes upwards.
  • Tops and dresses with interesting patterns on the neckline, showing off your shoulders and your neckline are feminizing.
  • If wearing pants, choose fitted/tailored tops to wear with them. Try unbuttoning up to where a good portion of your décolletage is showing. A V-neck top is also a great choice.
  • Wear skirts with shape and drapes your lower half nicely.

Create An Illusion Of Curves

  • If you are a thin Rectangle shape and your figure is boyish, look for details and shapes that create an illusion of having a waist.
  • Skirts with contoured waist band and add volume to your hips worn at low waist, can add that balance to create the illusion of curves.
  • Jeans create the boyish/masculine look so opt for an A-line skirt where it is fitted at the waist and flares out through the hips.
  • Patterns and details at your lower half is a great choice to add volume to your hips. It helps create an illusion of curves.
  • Dresses like Empire Waist create that illusion of curves.
  • Sheath dresses are great but choose one with print like Polka dots or florals as they add movement to your shape. Belting at the waist will not only create that waistline but also help break that vertical line from torso to hips.
  • Peplum style tops and dresses not only add curves but they also feminize the body.

AVOID

  • Avoid any structured or boxy style tops; instead look for styles with soft sleeves
  • If your shoulder tends to be broad, stay clear of horizontal patterns and prints on your shoulders as these will exaggerate the width of your shoulders.
  • Stay away from loose fitting styles like tunic tops as they increase a Rectangle body’s shapelessness
  • Any style of pants looks great on a Rectangle body but if your bottom is flat, avoid very low rises as they exaggerate the straight line of your torso to your waist and to your hips. Wear pants that are higher on your hip.
